Hi John,

Great Article! I didn't think it would make a turn towards the advantages of using OpenGL vs. Direct3D, but you're totally right!

Regarding iPhone development , I'm used to developing OpenGL apps using C++ and Python as well, but recently I'm starting to move towards iPhone development using Objective-C and it's been a very smooth ride.

Objective-C is a very easy language once you realize that C++'s p->m(x) is written as [p m:x] instead. Other than that and reference counting, the language is a walk in the park.

Great post! Keep up the good work!

Phil,

I tried out the asteroids game and it is great, especially considering that it only took 5 hours to create it. The only thing that I would change is to make the ship a smaller given that it is pretty large in relation to the relatively small screen area the game occupies.

Phil,

I think that a working asteroids implementation in a few hours is impressive. I am on my iPhone right now but I'll check it out and comment again when I get home. I will say that using Flash goes against the spirit of this post, but to each his own... :)

Thanks for sharing the story behind this project. I enjoyed reading about the original Mac version and the capabilities you were able to eek out of the 16mhz software renderer.

Unfortunately your post made me feel that a recent tribute to Asteroids a friend and I put together is less stelar. Granted we did build our version in only 5 hours from scratch with the Flash game engine we're working on. Feel free to check out Meteor at meteor.onemorepoint.com
